A traditional wedding in a church is the culmination of many conventions and customs. Wedding days are fun for the bride and the groom and an extremely joyous occasion for them as the day ushers in a future together. Bridal Attire Rhyme
Bridal attire rhyme probably originated in the Victorian times and the full wording of this rhyme is “something old, something new, something borrowed something blue and a silver sixpence in your shoe.”

And the blue color dated back to the biblical times when this color was associated with fidelity and purity of the bride and her love. Silver sixpence denotes the wealth of joy and contentment and also the financial wealth.
The Wedding Veil
How the wedding veil originated is a matter of great debate as no one knows the origin of this custom. There are many accounts of this beautiful tradition. According to one account, this originated at the time when the groom would throw a blanket over the head of his chosen bride and cart her off. Another explanation is that during the time of arranged marriages, it was not admissible for the groom to see his bride and so the veil to cover his face. Yet another version says that it represented the purity and chastity of the bride, and lifting the veil was symbolic of losing her innocence.
| Carrying the Bride over the Threshold
It is the accepted custom to carry the bride over the threshold of her new home when she and her husband enter their home first time as a married couple. One explanation is that this was done to protect the bride from evil spirits lurking on the threshold. Another explanation is that if the bride stumbled on the doorstep of her new home that will bring bad luck to her married life. So this intimate gesture of carrying her over the threshold.

Third Finger, Left Right
A bride wears her engagement and wedding ring on the third finger of her left hand. It is a bit obscure as to how this custom started and there is no evidence to suggest the origin of this tradition. However some school of thoughts believe that it started in the seventeenth century when a priest in a wedding ceremony arrived at the fourth finger including the thumb after touching the three fingers of the left hand in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. The Egyptians believed that the vein of love ran through the ring finger.
Bridal Flowers
Strong fragrance of the flowers would ward off the evil spirits or so it was believed. Floral garlands signify hope and fertility which is highly pertinent as marriage is the first step towards procreation.
