Vacations in St. John Island

Valentine’s Day is celebrated worldwide with much pomp and vigor. Valentine’s Day gives you the opportunity to make your Valentine realize that he/she is an integral part of your life. The best way to do it is to arrange a trip to St John, one of the most beautiful islands of the Caribbean.

The moment you arrive in St John, you can’t resist yourself from falling in love with this place. The glorious white sand beaches, the lush green parks, the sparkling blue waters, and the natural splendor of this island is sure to impress you in all ways. Though most part of the island is underdeveloped, this fact does not debar the tourists from visiting this place. For a stay in St John you can opt for the villas or the resorts or the hotels. These villas or resorts or hotels make the best of their efforts to make your stay pleasurable.

It is the National Park of St John that covers the major portion of the island. The beaches that have drawn the attention of the tourists in large numbers are situated on the north shore of St John. The major beaches of this island are the Trunk Bay, (regarded to be one of the ‘Best Ten Beaches in The World’), the Maho Bay, the Cinnamon Bay and the Lameshur Bay.

These beaches are not home to any hotel or resorts and therefore the public has easy access to these beaches. If you want to go for camping, then head towards the Mayo Bay or the Cinnamon Bay, as these beaches feature two camping grounds, a service that has been offered by the National Park. The most important fact that is associated with the beaches of St. John Island is that, these beaches offer excellent scope for snorkeling.

The Cruz Bay, the chief port of this island is a major tourist spot and a visit to this port would enable you to catch a glimpse of the ferries that pull in and out of the port.

The two 18th-century sugar plantations, known as the Annaberg Plantation and the Catherineberg ruins, situated on the North shore, speaks about the history of St. John. It needs to be mentioned here that the Catherineberg Ruins was the headquarter of slave revolt.

For local sight seeing you could hire a car or rent a taxi. For shopping, the best place to visit is the Cruz Bay, shopping district, that stretches from the Waharfside Village, situated on the north shore to the Mongoose junction If you want to shop for crafts, then you can pick up something from the Fabric Mill, that displays the various kinds of Caribbean crafts.

For jewelry, the best place to shop is the Colombian Emeralds and the Caravan Gallery, to name a few. Bougainvillea Boutique and the Clothing Studio are meant for clothes shoppers. If Cruz Bay has not been able to meet your demands, then a visit to the Coral Bay, a town on the eastern side of St. John, home to several supermarkets, is a must. After shopping, it is time to relish the delicious cuisine of St John. Try out the elliptical rolls of dough stuffed with ground beef, chicken, salt-fish or conch, bull foot soup, sweet fried plantains and salt fish. If you are for more then you can treat yourself to the mouth-watering barbecue chicken, breef brisket and pork ribs, served by the Sticky Fingers (a small restaurant located at Coral Bay).

If you want to explore the nightlife, then the best place would be the Cruz Bay’s King Street that comes alive with music and dance especially on Wednesday’s and Friday’s. Know more about St John from My Dear Valentine.
