Valentine Vacations in Corfu and Ionians

A unique way to acknowledge the significance of love, a grand sensation that adds vitality to your otherwise mundane life, is by gifting a Valentine Vacation to your sweetheart. And for an unparalleled fortnight, journey to the island of Corfu, renowned as the land of interminable sunshine.

Corfu has a fascinating array of pebbled beaches where you can enjoy and make the most of your Valentine Vacation. The best beach to get sun tanned and laze around is Glyfada. But if it is a yearning to swim, dive into the waters of Sidari, which is also known for its rock formations like Canal D’Amour. You should not, however, miss the rocky beach of Paleokastritsa which is overtopped by a monastery. Interestingly, the museum of this monastery houses the skeleton of an alien sea monster.

The town of Corfu is the abode of the cultural remains bestowed by its rulers, namely the British, the French and particularly the Venetians. In fact the influence of the Venetians is marked in the architecture of Corfu, where almost every construction is dark pink or ocher coloured with red tile roofs and shutters. The two most noteworthy Venetian structures of the town are the Palaio Frourio or the “Old Fortress” and the Neo Frourio or the “New Fortress”. While the Palaio Frourio, originally a Byzantine structure, was only refurbished by the Venetians, the Neo Frourio was constructed by them betwixt 1576 – 1589. To gain a deeper insight into the architecture of Corfu, inspect the two museums of Corfu- Mon Repos and Achilleon. Initially both of them were grand palaces. While Mon Repos, which consists of a beach, beautiful gardens, a theater and two Doric temples, was once the vacation site of the Greek Royal family, the rococo palace of Achilleon was the residence of a hypochondriac Austrian empress, believed to have settled there for the benefit of fresh air. It should also be noted that Mon Repos is open on all days except Mondays and Achilleon remains open on all days.

After you get over with the sightseeing, loosen up in the numerous cafes, bars and restaurants of the colourful town of Corfu. Once you are in a restaurant, sip some wine to enhance your appetite but don’t forget to order a bowl of fresh salad topped with feta cheese along with whatever you wish to eat. Also try some yummy summery dessert, fresh yogurt with lemon zest. Then go for a stroll along the Spaniada, a lively promenade that comprises a cricket ground wreathed by the lovely pedestrian path of Liston. If your Valentine is a shopaholic, take her to M.Theotoki Square and the streets encircling St. Spyridon Church and let her buy to her fill.

A holiday is best savored only when it is accompanied by the right accommodation. Hotel Bella Venezia, Grecotel Corfu Imperial, Cavalieri Hotel and Corfu Palace Hotel are some of the best-known luxury hotels of Corfu where you can pamper yourself to the utmost and transform your Valentine Vacation into a memorable one.
