The story of the movie is though a hilarious comedy but offers a romantic element to the ceremony of love. Mel Gibson playing the role of a Chicago advertising executive, Nick Marshall, after a major accident by fluke he suddenly realized his new gift. He was abruptly able to read women's mind. Growing up in an alpha male view ambience with his showgirl mother from Las Vegas had always made him look at women with contempt and disgrace to be precise.
His new gift brought out the best in him when he opted to out do his new boss Darcy Maguire featuring Helen Hunt. Despite trying out every possible trick on Darcy finally Nick finds himself falling for her and that is when he does justice to his question of 'What Women Want'.
The main issue that leads him to this accident are one being his 15 year old daughter who brings her boyfriend home while Nick's ex wife is out for her honeymoon and the second being his need to prove to both Darcy and Nick's manager Dan (played by Alan Alda) that he is still the best regarding his professional commitments.
Hence forth Nick attempts to provide a totally new and different angle to the advertisements for a number of female products. He accidentally slips on some bath beads and tumbles into the bathtub full of water, simultaneously holding an electrical hair dryer and he has one foot in the water thus getting him electrocuted. Next day he is alive and he wakes up to his new gift and initially feels perplexed as he seems to hear any woman and every woman in the block. Confused and upset he goes to his previous therapist (played by Bette Midler) who makes him aware of his gift and tells him that "if men are from Mars and women are from Venus, and you can speak Venetian, the world is your oyster".
This now puts him at odds with his teen age daughter who has drifted away from him now and is dating a boyfriend whom Nick suspects will have fun with her and throws her out after a while. The movie being a hilarious comedy movie ends in another freaky accident for Nick where he simultaneously loses his power and confesses about himself to Darcy who due to her romantic feeling for him decides to forgive him. Even his suspicions about his daughter's (Ashley Johnson) boy friend are also confirmed in the mean time and so now he has both his daughter and Darcy to complete his family.
