Edward Lewis (Richard Gere), is a rich, ruthless businessman who specializes in taking over companies and selling them off piece by piece. Edward makes a trip to Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, asking for directions to his hotel he meets Vivian (Julia Roberts). Vivian is a prostitute and Edward is willing to pay Vivian money, if Vivian agrees to stay with him for an entire week.
In the process Edward and Vivian develop feelings for each other or it can be said in other words that an unlikely love relationship develops between Edward and Vivian and the movie depicts their struggle with the differences that are prevalent in their professional and as well as social backgrounds.
