Love in its serious and comic hues is explored in Bridget Jones' Diary. This is the screen adaptation of the novel by the same name,
by Helen Fielding. Bridget Jones' Diary tells us the story of Bridget Jones, a thirty plus single woman living in London. She tries to understand the meaning of love and life while she is surrounded by a surrogate urban family of friends, Sharon, Jude and Tom.
Bridget Jones' Diary chronicles the humorous and romantic entanglement of Bridget with her boss Daniel Cleaver and also the attachment that was formed with barrister, Mark Darcy. The dealing of the subject of the movie is quite humorous and it chronicles the tempestuousness of the relationships that are portrayed in the movie. Bridget comes from a family of overconfident mother and down to earth father and a brother Jamie.
Many parallels are drawn between the classical English novel by Jane Austen, "Pride and Prejudice" and Bridget Jones' Diary. Because both the films depict the obsession of mothers trying to settle the love life of their children, and love winning in spite of hurdles. Two male protagonists of the two novels and movies, even share the same surname, Fitzwilliam Darcy and Mark Darcy.
The main characters of the movie have been portrayed by Colin Firth, Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant. The characters have been brought to life by the actors and all through the movie the feeling is one of enlightenment, one can almost exclaim, "Oh! My god, this is me!"
