With all the flashy gifts out there, sometimes you can get a much better response by sitting down and making some Valentine’s Day crafts for that special person in your life. Think about it: you could get them something just like everybody else or make an item from the heart. Which is better? Though you might not have a whole lot of time or artistic ability, you can still come up with a thoughtful design to impress your loved one. It may seem daunting at first, but a quick look through this list ought to get your wheels turning.
A Heart Spiral
The name makes this sound more complicated than it actually is. Cut a circle out of a piece of paper, then turn it as you slowly move a pencil from the center out toward the edge. (The resulting spiral pattern should have roughly a half-inch of space between each line.
) Now take a pair of scissors and carefully cut along the line all the way to the center, creating a spring-like shape when you reach the center and hold one end. Fix as many heart shapes cut from pieces of colored paper as you’d like to the spiral, then use your creation as a decoration for your date night.
Crayon Hearts
This is one of the simplest ideas – all it takes is some crayons, wax paper, a warm iron, and some scissors to complete. Begin by shaving a variety of Valentine’s Day colors into piles so you have a wide selection of pinks and reds to choose from. Sprinkle these thin chunks onto the wax paper in whatever proportions you’d like – all one color, a blend of several, etc. When done, fold the wax paper over on itself and cover the brightly-colored layer before using the iron to seal the design. After your work cools, cut a heart shape to complete your work. If you want, make a few of them and punch a hole near the top before hanging them in front of a window with a piece of string. It’s a one-of-a-kind holiday decoration that can last the whole season.
3-D Cards
If you have an artistic bend, or just the desire to show the person you love how much they mean to you, handcrafting a Valentine’s Day card is a great way to do so. It allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of his or her favorites by creating something personal – and you can even use it to smile about some inside jokes. Begin with a single sheet of construction paper, preferably in a lighter color you can write on with pen or markers. Next, cut whatever shapes you’d like out of brighter shades – a red airplane if you’re planning to take a trip soon or a pair of pink love birds – and glue them down to the background sheet. Continue adding layers as you see fit, then add a bit of poetry or a few words to share your feelings and voila! you have something to make Hallmark jealous.
