My Dear Valentine
A voyage to take you beyond love

Valentine's Day Denmark

As in the rest of Europe, Valentine's Day in Denmark, is a major attraction for the youth of the country. Who can ignore the ardor of love? The Danes have certain fascinating rituals connected with the Valentine celebrations. The mid-February celebration is a very joyous occasion and the country is saturated with Valentine flowers and Valentine cards.

The Danes call their Valentine card, "lover's card." The older versions of this greeting cards came in a transparent form which, if held against the light showed the image of a lover handing a gift to his beloved.

One interesting custom connected with Valentine's Day in Denmark is sending pressed white flowers called Snowdrops to their friends. Danish men may also send Valentine letter called "gaekkebrev" (or "joking letter"). This type of letter does not have the signature of the writer.

Instead, there are dots for each alphabet of his name. If the lady who receives the card guesses the name of the sender, then she is rewarded with an Easter egg later in the year.

The celebration of the modern Danish youth is pretty global. There are innumerable Valentine parties, where food, dancing and music are in full attendance. The exchange of flowers, or rather sending flowers to the beloved has also taken root. The more adventurous couples spend the Valentine season in some appealing vacation spot. The hotels and clubs arrange for fabulous Valentine parties.
