A novel is an extended work of prose fiction and the Romance Novels refer to those novels that deal with love, romance and the various aspects of the relationship of love. Romance Novel Authors concentrate on the theme of love and they brilliantly portray the romance that develops between the characters. Given below is an account of two authors of romance novels and their works.
Jane Austen (16th December 1775 – 18th July, 1887) was a renowned English novelist. Her detailed portrayal of the women characters that belong to high-class society made her one of the most successful novelists of her time. One of the most widely recognized and well-known romance novels of Jane Austin is Pride and Prejudice. Though Austen is a novelist of the era when the Romantic Movement took place, she is not passionately romantic.
The novel Pride and Prejudice revolves around the life of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their five daughters.
Mrs. Bennet is desperate on getting her daughters married to men who belong to high-class society. Mr. Bennet is particularly worried about the fact that their estate would pass on to the hands of William Collins, who is Mr. Bennet’s cousin and the only heir after Mr Bennet’s death. Things take a different turn or it can be said that the lives of the members of the Bennet family changes when Fitzwilliam Darcy along with his friend, Charles Bingley, arrive at their hometown. The love story that develops between Darcy and Elizabeth (the eldest of the five daughters) has been beautifully sketched by Jane Austen.
Thomas Hardy (2nd June, 1840 – 11th January, 1928) - Thomas Hardy is an acclaimed novelist, poet and short story writer. Hardy’s characters are eternal sufferers. A few of the romantic novels of Thomas Hardy are ‘Return Of the Native’, ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’, ‘Tess of the U’’dervilles’, Mayor of Casterbridge’ and ‘Jude The Obscure’.
A short summary of the novel, ‘Tess of the U’’dervilles’: Tess, the female protagonist of the novel is the daughter of John and Joan Durbeyfield. Joan wants Tess to get married to Mrs. Durberville’s son. Tess falls in love with Alec, son of Mrs. D U’dervilles. Alec succeeds in seducing Tess and Tess becomes pregnant with Alec’s child. Tess gives birth to a son and she gets involved emotionally with his child but she could not baptize her child, as she was not married to Alec. But misfortune does not leave Tess, as her child dies at an early age. Tess later gets married to Angel, the heir of Reverend Mr. Claire. When Tess reveals the truth about her relationship with Alec to Angel, Angel leaves her and goes to South America.
Alec realized his mistake and he goes back to Tess but she was unwilling to make Angel a part of her life once again and therefore she gets her sister married to Angel. Tex also realizes that it is Alec who is responsible for all her misery and sufferings and for this reason Alec was killed by Tess. The novel ends with Tess getting severe punishment for her act.
