Modern romance novels depict the contemporary social scenario with some amount of honesty. My Dear Valentine is using this phrase ‘some amount’ because any work of fiction must make allowances for a perfect situation for the couples to meet, perfect characters and perfect happy ending. Modern life is full of challenges as more and more women globally are leaving home to carve out a career for themselves and do something on their own. Men have shed their earlier egoistic attitude and have stopped playing God. In today’s society, Oriental or Occidental, men have stopped playing the superior card and have accepted women the way they are.
All these sentiments find a place in modern romance novels. The plot usually has the two protagonists and other supporting characters who may or may not make things difficult for the couple in love. Portrayal of intimacy is another area, which is delved deep in modern romance novels. Earlier, eroticism was not much of an option to make the book sell. Renowned novelists like Sidney Sheldon, Danielle Steele, Jeffrey Archer, and Irving Wallace have depicted romance amidst harsh realities of life.
There are other writers too whose work appeal to many in the society. These books are not one dimensional, they are multidimensional with plots and several subplots interwoven with each other. The character of the lead man or woman can be anything, good, bad or ugly and it is absolutely not necessary to have happy endings to such romances.
Age posses no difficulty in modern romance novels. The main protagonist can be a young man of thirty or he can be mature and experienced with what life has to offer at fifty. The same holds true for the lady. These romances are so realistic that it is not possible to put down modern romance novels when one has taken one up to read. Read one to find out for yourself!
