The stories reflecting all these aspects, including romance, are:
Thirst for Rain by Roslyn Carrington, Candy Don't Come In Gray by Roslyn Carrington, Casting The First Stone by Kimberly Lawson Roby, Chesapeake Song by Brenda Lane Richardson, Every Bitter Thing Sweet by Roslyn Carrington, God Don't Like Ugly by Mary Monroe, When Twilight Comes by Gwynne Forster, Cry Me A River by Ernest Hill, A Mighty Love by Anita Doreen-Di, A Journey To Here by Margaret Johnson-Hodge, Baby Mamma Drama by Carl Webber, Got A Man by Daaimah S. Poole.
Thirst for Rain is about the struggle in the lives of Myra and the other associated characters who are constantly fighting to make it big in their lives. Inclusive of all these, the touch of confusing romantic associations among the protagonists accord a loosely based plot to the story where all the characters and their romantic entanglements claim importance and focus from time to time. Simultaneously in Candy Don't Come In Gray the character of Mattie Dinkins, the illegitimate daughter of the illustrious white businessman, Dominic Evers, is seen struggling for an identity which she doubts she will never achieve. This insecurity takes its toll on her and on the other hand Jonah Reyes is brought out of his poverty as Dominic Evers plans to get him married to his legitimate daughter Justice. Casting The First Stone reflects the married life of Tanya Black and husband who seems to have suddenly gone haywire resulting in their once perfect marriage to fall apart. Now torn between her ethics and her marriage, she has to make things right and in the process she learns the sour lessons of life and emerges stronger.
In the novel Chesapeake Song, Tamra abandons her happy marriage of 13 years and wanders out for her identity. In the process she seeks inspiration from her mother and her grand mother and she learns the valuable lessons of life revolving around family, sacrifice and relationships. Every Bitter Thing Sweet, a sequel to Carrington’s previous novel Thirst for Rain, focuses on the same struggle for existence in the rugged and economically wrecked place of Trinidad. Whereas in God Don't Like Ugly the character of Annette Goode is shown suffering from the trauma of child abuse. Time and again she lands up in a vicious circle of familial situations and loosely connected relations. On the contrary, both A Mighty Love and A Journey To Here reflects the life and situations of the married couples who are trying hard to make things right in their marriages. In the former Mel and Adrienne are seen struggling to keep their relationship after the death of their daughter. In the process of making successful career, Adrienne realizes the importance of their love and similarly Mel, who was also lost in his world of drugs and women, realizes the necessity of love which had long been forgotten by both of them.
The latter novel tells a story about Sylvia who is happy in her marriage and has eventually come out of the trauma she had faced due to her ex-lover and her best friend. She was getting on well with life when she suddenly finds her past knocking at her door. The last two novels, Baby Mamma Drama and Got A Man, give the clichéd impression of single women looking for easy love and when they find some one they invariably want to hold on to him expecting him to accept them some day despite knowing that it’s a distant dream. In Baby Mama Drama, Jasmine, the lead protagonist keeps running after Derrick who is having a notorious history of illegitimate relations and siblings in these relations. Jasmine somehow refuses to come to terms with this reality. On the other hand, in Got A Man, Shonda Robinson and Kimberly Vanessa fight over this one man Malik Moore, whom they both belive to be the right man for them. Despite knowing about his short comings they can’t stop anticipating acceptance from him.
