Angel Poems

What is the first impression evoked when we hear the word, 'ANGEL'? This word signifies a feeling of softness, purity, and blessings. Angel is a very powerful word, which defines divinity and optimism. If something is going towards a worse direction, we wish an angel to come and save the whole situation. If we perceive angels in a more philosophical manner, we can come to a conclusion that the angels are supposed to do some divine and good tasks in order to save us from miseries.

Angel, the phrase is derived from a Greek word Angelos, which means agent. According to the popular myth, angels are created by God to fulfill his wish on earth. Thus, it can be said that angels form an important part in Christianity. Angel poems can make you feel the presence of angels around you, if you don't believe in them. Angel poems can bring a strong sense of peace in your mind. Moreover, if you don't believe in God, the angel poems can evoke your faith on the almighty God. Faith and dream- these are two basis elements of angel poetry. These poems can fill anyone's life with the faith to believe in God as well as his messengers. For this reason angel poems are also called inspirational poems.

In the real life also, there must be someone, who plays the role of an angel. The person may be our parents or a baby or our friends, but he/she certainly does something in our life for which we compare him/her to an angel in our life. He/she may inspire us to do a task or help us to do an impossible deed, or simply consoles us when we become depressed. Angels can take any form- human as well as imaginary. Can't it be justified if you say that the old granny who stirs the child to sleep is an angel or the baby who provokes smile on everyone's face is an angel?

Some of the greatest poets who have written the best angel poems include William Blake, Robert Brooke, Bobert Browning, Emily Dickenson, John Donne, Ellis Parker, Butler, Maya Angelou etc. Given below are some examples of angle poems written by some of the most eminent poets of the world.

  • The Angel (William Blake)

I dreamt a dream! What can it mean?
And that I was a maiden Queen
Guarded by an Angel mild:
Witless woe was ne'er beguiled!

And I wept both night and day,
And he wiped my tears away;
And I wept both day and night,
And hid from him my heart's delight.

So he took his wings, and fled;
Then the morn blushed rosy red.
I dried my tears, and armed my fears
With ten-thousand shields and spears.

Soon my Angel came again;
I was armed, he came in vain;
For the time of youth was fled,
And grey hairs were on my head.

  • I Heard an Angel (William Blake)

I heard an Angel singing
When the day was springing,
"Mercy, Pity, Peace
Is the world's release."
Thus he sung all day
Over the new mown hay,
Till the sun went down
And haycocks looked brown.
I heard a Devil curse

Over the heath and the furze,
"Mercy could be no more,
If there was nobody poor,

And pity no more could be,
If all were as happy as we."
At his curse the sun went down,
And the heavens gave a frown.

Down pour'd the heavy rain
Over the new reap'd grain ...
And Miseries' increase
Is Mercy, Pity, Peace.

  • A Lost Angel (Ellis Parker Butler)
  • The Guardian Angel (Robert Browning)
  • The Boy and the Angel (Robert Browning)

These are all poems about angels and all these poems showcase different faces of angels. In some, the poet compares a baby with angel while in some the angel is seen in anyone, we know in person.
