Wristcutters A Love Story is a comedy movie bit a black one. The film has been released this year and has been directed by Goran Dukic. The main cast comprises of Patrick Fugit (Zia), Shannyn Sossamon (Mikal), Shea Whigham (Eugene), Tom Waits (Kneller), Will Arnett (Messiah) and others. Zia is heartbroken after a breakup with his girlfriend and commits suicide. He wakes up in after life only to find that the population in the other world consists entirely of person who had killed themselves. The radio plays only Joy Division and Nirvana and the colors are all desaturated.

Zia learns that his former girlfriend has also killed herself and so decides to find her. His hitching with a Russian misfit and a moody Goth hitchhiker in a battered station wagon to find his former girlfriend gives the film some of its best moments.
Tom Waits has appeared in a cameo role and has been outstanding. Will Arnett’s role is almost another cameo role. The film explores the idea – can suicide, escaping from it all, really solve problems? Suicide is not a solution to anything otherwise Zia would not have said, “What can I do about it now, kill myself again?”
The film is fast paced and holds the attention of the viewers. The music is competent too. It is pertinent to mention here that, Dukic specifically picked bands that had experienced suicide at some point of time or other for the music played in afterlife. Direction is clear and concise and quite arty. A surprise package in all!
