Despite being classified as a tragedy it is quite unlikely to be branded among the famous tragedies. Some would argue that the lover's demise did not happen due to their actions but it was a fruit of the actions of other characters in the novels. Romeo and Juliet is considered more to be a tragedy of mistiming and ill fate. According to Isaac Asimov irrationality and rashness of youth was the tragic flaw compounded by the ineffectuality of Friar Lawrence.
The play opens in Verona, in Italy, where a conflict between the families of Montegues and Capulets has broken out. The conflict is commenced by servants of the houses and eventually draws the members of the families and the city officials. Romeo is seen bemoaning for being in love with Rosaline, a woman who has vowed to remain chaste. He and his friend Benovolio ran into a servant of the Capulet's in the street and Romeo manages an invitation to the Capulet's party. At the party Romeo falls in love with Juliet the instant he saw her. Juliet's cousin Tybalt, on recognizing Romeo makes advances to kill him when he is stopped by Capulet who warns him against ruining the decorum of the party. Romeo and Juliet found that they are in love with their enemies and bemoaned over this.
Romeo sneaks into Juliet's garden and they decide to get married secretly with the help of Juliet's nurse and Friar Lawrence who marries them in chapel. Tybalt comes to Mercutio looking for Romeo to settle scores for his sneaking in to the party. Despite Mercutio's vague reply, Romeo appeared in the scene and he was challenged by Tybalt. Despite Romeo's attempts to avert a fight Mercutio draws his sword on Tybalt and faces death, and an enraged Romeo fights with Tybalt and kills him and he is banished from Verona. Juliet on getting the sad new from her nurse is heart broken. Juliet's marriage is fixed with Paris by Capulet. To avert this mishap Juliet goes to Laurence who agrees to make her seem dead for at least two days and thus she takes the potion and the next morning she is found dead by the nurse. The family was convinced by Laurence Friar to put her body in the family vault.
In the meantime Romeo received the news about Juliet's death and hurries back to Verona. A panicked Laurence rushed to Juliet's grave to get their before Romeo.
Romeo, after seeing Juliet's motionless body within her tomb Romeo drank some poison and died kissing her.
Laurence arrived as Juliet woke up and stabbed herself right theough her heart with his dagger on seeing him dead beside her. The Capulet and Montegue families after knowing the whole story from Friar Lawrence agreed to be friends and erected golden statues in memory of their children.
The characters of Romeo and Juliet have been brought together on the same platform to fall in love with each other despite being so different from each other and the tragic love novel have been brought into life. Romeo has been featured as an immature and unreasonable character that takes reckless decisions and jumps to conclusions very easily. While Juliet being a more balanced character helps to bring out the poetic best in Romeo and give this story the shade of passion and the more required touch of intensity. Unfortunately for Romeo's reckless decisions and impatience the story ends for the lovers in eternal tragedy and sadness.
