In Lowood school Jane develops a strong bond with Helen. An epidemic sweeps Lowood and this epidemic affects Helen in a bad way and Helen dies.

Eventually Jane becomes a teacher at a Lowood school. Jane wants to explore life beyond Lowood and therefore gives an advertisement in the paper and gets a job of a governess at the Thornfield Hall.

Jane becomes the governess of a French girl, named Adele. Adele is the ward of Edward Rochester. Edward Rochester is the owner of Thornfield Hall. Jane at the Thornfield Hall interacts with Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeeper and Adele. After Edward Rochester arrives at Thornfield Hall. Jane meets Edward for the first time and after a few interactions Jane develops a liking towards Edward. Edwards also develops strong feelings for Jane and Jane and Edward gets engaged. At their time of engagement, Jane is nineteen years of age and Edward Rochester is forty years old.

When Jane and Edward get ready to exchange their wedding vows, they are interrupted by a lawyer, who claims that Edward is already married to a woman named Bertha Manson. Jane gets the shock of her life and refuses the proposal of Edward of going abroad with Edward. Jane leaves Thornfield at the middle of the night.

Jane finds refuge in the house of St John Rivers and develops a strong bond with St John Rivers' two sisters. Jane gets a job of a village schoolteacher. Eventually Jane discovers that St John Rivers and her two sisters are her cousins. Jane inherits a large sum of money form an uncle, named Sir John Eyre and Jane decides to share this sum of money with her cousins. St John Rivers, wants to fulfill his wish, is to go to India as a missionary. St John Rivers proposes Jane to marry him but Jane refuses, as she does not love St John Rivers. St John puts pressure on Jane to marry him and when Jane almost makes the decision of marrying St John Rivers, she hears the voice of Edward and she feels the urge to return to Thornfield Hall.

Jane arrives at Thornfield and comes to know that Rochester has become blind and has also lost a hand and the reason behind this was an attempt that Edward made to save Bertha from the flames. Jane and Edward Rochester get married and the last chapters of the novel mentions that Rochester had gained sight in one eye and Jane and Rochester become the parents of a son.
