Abyssinian Love Bird

Love birds make gorgeous pets. They are very friendly and noisy birds, who love preening, billing and cooing with their mates for the whole day. There is another name for Abyssinian love birds, which is Black winged love bird. These birds are found in central and eastern Ethiopia and southern Eritrea. They love to inhabit high altitudes.

Love birds are sexually dimorphic. The Abyssinian cock bird is mainly green with a bright red forehead which extends into a narrow ring around the eyes. The flight feathers are very black and a black bar is present on the tail. The hen love bird has a green body, but the shade of green is darker on the back. It does not have the red and black markings of the cock. Though Abyssinian love birds are kept as pets, they do not breed easily in captivity.

Abyssinian love birds require a diet with higher fat content than other love birds. Though seed pellets are available, these birds need to be fed some fruits like, corn, apples and mission figs. They are difficult to breed in captivity, but when they do lay eggs there are usually four in a clutch. The birds are very noisy, and therefore households with sick people should consider this aspect very carefully before adopting them as pets.
