The legend of St. Valentine dates back to the 3rd century around 270 A.D. He was a Roman priest who empathized
much with Roman centurions those who were to be drafted into the military services. In order to protect the ever expanding Roman empire beyond Rome the then emperor of Rome Claudius II declared that none of the Roman boys and able bodied men could get engaged to be married. As the emperor already came to know that married men could no longer be good soldiers and hence he came to the decision of banning marriage throughout the Roman kingdom.
However kind hearted and loving Valentine realized the injustice that was being done to his fellow countrymen and openly defied the king. He married off many young couples especially those who were in love with each other secretly in castle basements and wine cellars. Claudius the second when he came to know about the activities of Valentine that were elicit according to him, he immediately ordered a death sentence upon him in front of his countrymen. Thus the trend of celebrating love among lovers was set on 14th day February each year signifying the sacrifice and dedication of St. Valentine for love.
