Pointe Shoes

Pointe shoes or toe shoes as it is commonly known were specially designed for ballet dancers for Pointe work. These dance shoes have the toe box stiffened with glue so as to enable ballet dancers to rise on tip toes. Pointe shoes were designed from the desire to appear weightless onstage and over the years they have evolved to permit lengthy periods of movement on the tips of the toes.

The standard ballet shoes for women when they first appeared on stage in 1681 were heeled. Marie Camargo was the first woman to wear a non-heeled shoe, to enable her to do more complex jumps. Post French Revolution, the standard ballet shoes were no longer heeled.

Today dancers use canvas or satin Pointe shoes with a hard yet flexible shank and a box constituting layers of canvas, burlap, paper and glue. Owing to the hardness of the shoes when new, most dancers develop individual techniques to break in their pointe shoes to ensure support and flexibility to allow easy movement.

Veteran ballet dancers select their dance shoes with much care checking that they are even and balanced. Dancers generally have their favorite brand, model, and even maker when it comes to selecting their favorite pointe shoes. There is a variety of pointe shoes and each fits the individual dancer in a different way.Often the choreography will determine the type of shoe required. For example the supple, lyrical style of the white swan, will need a softer shoe, while the black swan's alluring turns are best performed in a hard, stiff shoe.

Pointe shoes usually come in a variety of light pink colors ranging from peachy pink to rosy pink, to very pale pink. They also come in black and white though pointe shoes can be ordered in almost any color.

Though pointe shoes are generally worn by female ballet dancers, male dancers can also wear them for certain roles, like men performing as women in dance companies like Grandiva and Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo.

It is imperative that young girls be fitted into their pointe shoes only by a professional to avoid chronic injuries.
