60’s Fashion

The swinging sixties had the most memorable fashion trends and designs. Everything about the 60’s was very distinctive. The fashion of the 60’s was a reflection of the cultural, ideological and emotional rebellion of the people of the 60’s. The 60’s fashion was an external reflection of the internal turmoil and outrage. The sixties are synonymous with anti war movements, youth, free love, peace symbols and hippies. Everything about that generation was different, the 60’s culture seeped deep into the soul of the people, it went beyond clothes and it was a way of living.

The fashion of the early sixties had influences of the fifties where men and women wore conservative and proper clothes. Women wore evening gown and gloves to parties and men wore suits. Women in the early sixties wore pants only during sports and play. As the years went by the dresses and skirts became shorter and the colors were much louder and very vibrant.

The second half of the sixties saw a complete turnabout in its fashion sense. The rebellions and dynamic social changes sweeping through the world in its antiwar motions manifested themselves in the 60’s fashion. Bold, bright and big prints were the call of the day. The colors were flashy vibrant and multi hued. The 60’s fashion is synonymous with psychedelic prints and flower power. The powerful influences of those times were The Beatles, Britain, politics, drugs and rock and roll.

There were two main categories of fashion that prevailed in the 1960’s, namely the hippie look and the mod look. The hippie look was grungy, loose and very casual. The peace symbol, bell bottom pants, headband, flower prints, torn denims, colored sunglasses and miniskirts were characteristic of the hippie fashion. However this look wasn't complete without long hair for men and women, tie and dye and psychedelic prints on clothes, home furnishings, and everything possible.

However the essential element of being a hippie was in the attitude, which was 'love peace not war!' The other primary fashion look of the 60’s was the mod look. This was characterized by miniskirts and micro minis. This look originated in Britain and one of the high priestesses of this look was Mary Quant. She introduced the 60’s to colored tights and short skirts. The cuts of the dresses and shirts were minimal and straight. The hair was sleek and straight and the bob was the signature hairstyle. Eye makeup was bold and black and the rest of the face was shades of nude.

The fashion of the swinging sixties will never be forgotten, they were the style gurus of the 20th century.
