60’s dresses

The trend of fashion which started moving upward since the 14th century, witnessed a considerable growth in the 60’s. 1960 was the decade that broke almost all the conventional fashion traditions in order to popularize a whole new concept of fashion. Contemporary, chic and credible fashion trends ruled the 60’s dressing style whist making 60 to stand out amidst crowd. Soap operas, movies and television played a significant role in the fashion trend of 60’s. Dressing style was therefore somewhat a reflection of the trend seen in the famous movies and soap serials. Bikini came into fashion in the year 1963 as a bold strike in the history of fashion whilst popularizing a rather unconventional yet graceful and at the same time alluring look. After being featured in the famous movie “beach party”, miniskirt came into fashion and was widely accepted as typically one of the trendy 60’s dresses to reverberate the very pulse of the 60’s style.

60’s fashion also witnessed the effect of the “hippie movement”. As a result the very trendy fashion or precisely “the hippie” style amidst 60’s dresses in the form of hip huggers, in the form of those waist hugging jeans and of course in the form of those tie and dye denims made its presence felt quite widely. Bell bottom jeans, paddle pushers, tunics and above knee miniskirts became popular 60’s dresses both as day and evening wears for women.

While the hippie movement added a significant dimension in 60’s dresses, it is also the influence of the pop and jazz culture (bands like Beatles, Abba etc) that added a rather trendy look to the 60’s dresses. Batik fabrics, stripes and jazzy colors remained as some of the most desired fashion trends which further categorized 60’s dress and style as contemporary and vibrant. The usage of head coverings also witnessed a dramatic change in the 60’s which further added maturity to the conventional style of 60’s dressing trends. The disappearance of men’s formal hat is definitely one big change in the 60’s dressing style. Woman started growing their hair long. Women experimented with almost every hairdo from those beehive hairdos to twiggy short hair to complement well with the traits of 60’s dresses. The “pillbox hat” became famous in this era to complete that typical look of the 60’s.
