There she obtained licentiateships in physics and mathematical sciences.
Poland University, Sorbonne did not admit women back then and Marie had actually come a long way to take admission. Most of time Marie spent reading either in the library or in the laboratory; meanwhile she caught Pierre Curie's attention who was the director of one of the laboratories Marie worked in. He tried every possible method to convince her to marry him and simultaneously gave her ample marriage proposals. They finally got married in 1895 and began their glorious partnership towards marriage and as scientific associates.
With Pierre's death in a road mishap Marie decided to continue his work and in the year 1911 she became the first person to have achieved two noble prizes. She got the first noble prize in 1903 in physics for discovering radioactivity and the second one was for chemistry.
A medical practitioner's son, Pierre Curie was born in Paris. Before joining the Faculty of Sciences at the Sorbonne he received his early education at home. He received his licentiateship in physics in 1878 and worked as a demonstrator in physics laboratory until 1882. It was here in 1894 that he found Marie Curie, his soul mate, who shared the same passion for physics and discovery of new scientific findings. Pierre was succeeded by his wife as head of the physics laboratory and got her Doctor of Science degree in the year 1903 and with the Pierre's tragic death in 1906 Marie started teaching as the professor of general physics in the faculty of sciences and joined as the first woman professor in the university. In the Curie laboratory in the Radium Institute of the University of Paris she was appointed as the director.
Their early researches often had to be performed under difficult circumstances and due to poor laboratory arrangements they were forced to earn a livelihood by teaching. Henry Becquerel's discovery of radioactivity greatly inspired them and eventually the Curies also came up with the isotopes of polonium and radium.
