When two great minds are conjoined in holy matrimony, the period that follows is of pure ecstasy and unmitigated bliss. So was the life of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning whose contribution to English literature cannot be underestimated. She is generally considered to be the greatest woman poets of England till now. Barrett Browning was born at Cohnadatia Hall located near Durham in 1806.
She came from a Creole family and her father was a rich plantation owner in Jamaica. Elizabeth’s mother came from a moneyed family residing in New Castle upon Tyne. The family was an ancient one descending from King Edward III of England.
Elizabeth was educated at home and gained considerable expertise over Greek language. She remained in delicate health all through her life. Probably she contracted tuberculosis when she was a young teenager which made her delicate throughout her life. Some of her well known works are An Essay on Mind and Other Poems. 1935 saw one of the finest works in English literature being created-Prometheus Bound. The Romaunt of Margaret, The Romaunt of the Page, The Poet’s Vow and The Seraphim and Other Poems by Elizabeth Barrett Browning are eternal gems of literature.
What can one say about a great poet Robert Browning? One of the greatest playwrights and poets of England, his long blank verse poem The Ring and the Book is enough to make his name remain etched in gold for posterity. Some of his other famous works are Sordello, Strafford, Paracelsus, Pauline: A Fragment of a Confession, Bells and Pomegranates and Men and Women. Robert Browning was born in Camberwell and was blessed to have parents immersed in scholarly discussions. Such environment at home helped his talents flower at an early age. He was greatly attached to the works of the Romantic poets, specially he admired Shelley.
