Valentines Day is observed all over the world on February 14. On this day lovers express their love for each other, as this day is associated with love and romance. Given here is an account of the famous romance of Abelard and Heliose.
Peter Abelard (1079-1142) was the niece of Canon Fulbert and is known to be a great French philosopher. He is also regarded as one of the greatest thinkers of the 12th century. Abelard teachings were controversial in nature and he was accused of heresy.
Abelard's writings for a certain period of time were included in the index of the Forbidden Books by the Church. Abelard meets Heliose at the house of Canon Fulbert, of the Cathedral of Notre Dam where Peter Abelard gets accepted as a boarder.
Abelard falls for Heliose and to increase his acquaintance convinces Fulbert to make him her tutor. Soon Heliose becomes pregnant. As Abelard was the tenet of Notre Dam he was aware of the fact that if he married Heliose then he would be thrown out of his job, but Abelard still wants to get married to Heliose. Heliose refuses Abelard's proposal for she knew that their marriage
would jeopardize Abelard's professional life. Abelard manages to convince Heliose and both get married. Abelard and Heliose became proud parents of a son and names him Astrolobe. But Abelard is faced with a dilemma. He wants to let Fulbert know about their marriage and he also knew that if he tells Fulbert about their marriage, then he would lose his job.
Eventually Fulbert comes to know about their marriage and feels that Abelard has destroyed Heliose life and in order to take revenge on Abelard, Fulbert hires some goons to teach him a lesson. The goons attack Abelard one night and castrate him. Feeling ashamed Abelard goes to a monastery at the Abbey of St Denis and becomes a monk. And in spite Abelard's objections Heliose also becomes a nun. At a later period Heliose becomes the mother superior and earns the recognition of a successful administrator. And at around 1132, Abelard and Heliose once again begin to interact with each other.
Abelard establishes a chapel called Pareclete as a gift to Heliose and eventually becomes the mother superior. On the other hand, Abelard becomes the abbot of the monastery at Saint-Gildas-de Rhuis. Peter, the Venerable of Cluny, takes care of Abelard in his last days. Sometime later Heliose also leaves her earthly abode. Abelard and Heliose are buried by the side in a single tomb in the Abbey of St Denis in Paris. Abelard's sister adopts their son.
