Pyramus and Thisbe |
| |
The love story of Pyramus and Thisbe has its origins in the Roman Mythology, though some believe it to be just a sentimental love story without being any part of Roman Mythology. Whatever be the case, the tale is best recounted by Ovid and the passion of love that blossomed between the two young lovers enthralls readers even today. Pyramus and Thisbe were neighbors in Babylonia. He was the handsomest youth and she was the most beautiful girl in the conurbation. The friendly acquaintance gradually blossomed into love but it was forbidden fruit for the lovers.Their parents were totally against their union, leaving them with no option but burn the light of love brightly in their hearts and meet surreptitiously if they can.

One day while whispering through a crack in the wall, they decide to meet the next day under a mulberry tree near tomb of Ninus. But it was then that tragedy struck. A lioness came to drink water in the fountain and Thisbe in her hurried flight to safety left her veil behind. The lioness after quenching her thirst sniffed the veiled and tore it with the blood streaked jaws and went away.
Meanwhile Pyramus arrived at the appointed spot and saw the tattered blood stained veil. He thought that his love was dead and blaming himself to be the cause of her death, killed himself with his sword. Thisbe came out of her hiding place and seeing the dead body of her lover was beside herself with grief. She too killed herself and thus one of the purest and truest lovers left this world.
