How to Make Valentine’s Day Special on a Budget

Posted on :2014-01-18 in

When February 14th rolls around, the temptation to blow the farm on planning a super-romantic evening is tough to resist. In this economy, though, finding a way to make Valentine’s Day special on a budget is more and more of a priority for a lot of couples.

What’s most important is the ability to really cherish each other as you celebrate your relationship, despite what all the marketing geniuses at the jewelry companies would have you think.

If you are among the many who want to create the best night possible without spending an arm and a leg, here are a few ideas that will help you get started.

How to Make Valentine’s Day Special on a Budget

Focus on the Photos

Naturally, the two of you are likely to spend some time reminiscing about your relationship over the course of the day, but it doesn’t have to mean sitting on the couch looking through one photo album after another! Thanks to the larger and larger numbers of digital pictures we have stored on our computers, it is possible to create works of art without damaging a single image. What you can do, depending on you and your partner’s computer savvy, is select a few pictures for both of you to create a collage from. Let’s say, for example, each of you have identical stacks of 12. Turn away from each other for ten minutes, arrange them in the way you separately think they reflect your relationship, then see how similar they are. You’ll be surprised how much discussion and laughter it brings!

Have Dinner at Home

This may seem like a no-brainer, but the idea is not to have one of you slaving over the stove in the kitchen while the other relaxes on the couch with the newspaper – unless you are giving the primary cook the night off. The pace of modern life means we often struggle to spend time together as we do something, so figure out a menu you both will like and can work together on. It will give you the chance to connect and just enjoy each other’s company while getting something accomplished. You could, say, dig your hands into making pasta noodles from scratch before one of you creates the sauce and the other works on a salad. And, after it’s all finished, the conversation you’ve already started can continue around the table without interruption.

Make Your Own Dance Club

Chances are good you or someone you love has a personal music player that can be turned into a portable DJ for the evening. Push the furniture to the sides of the living room and play songs you love from every era and genre. If one of you is shy about your moves, the fact there is no crowd will allow you to be as wild and free as you like. You could even just use a local radio station if you like, though it’s much more fun if you are able to select from a bunch of tunes you both know and like – just make sure to get a few slow ones in there for the sake of romance.
