How to Break Up through Email

Posted on :2012-12-19 in

Breaking up from someone with whom you were once deeply involved in a love relationship can be a hard task. Undoubtedly, there is a pain attached to ending the relationship but if you are no longer in love and see the bond more as a burden then it is best to come out of it.

The best way to convey your decision to break up is to do it in person. However, if you lack the guts to engage in a face-to-face discussion about the breaking up or when the circumstances do not permit so then you can consider breaking up by sending an email.

There are rules to abide by if you wish to avoid the end of relationship to come in a bitter tone by conveying the news through email.

Think it through

Before you sit down to write an email stating your wish to end the relationship, think over it again in your mind and find out if this is really your ultimate decision.  Once you have sent the mail, there is no looking back and you may not get the chance to retract your decision. Compose the mail only when you are very sure that this is not coming out of any frustration or is a result of the pent-up feelings because of some recent spats or discord in the relationship.

Analyze and point out the reasons

Once you have decided that breaking up is what you really want to do then you can shoot a mail. However, be ready to have a clear mind about the valid reasons that you will need to mention for the fallout. Sit down and analyze the reasons why you wish to end the relationship. Be sure that you have reasons that could be defended and not trivial to support your decision of breaking up. Mention some of the reasons in the email but use them in the right language to avoid hurting the other person badly.

Be brief and to the point

Composing a lengthy email about breaking up a relationship is not a good idea. More the explanations you point out and lengthy the mail you make for conveying your reasons for breaking up, more excruciating will be the pain for the other person to accept your decision. Avoid dragging on the letter and filling it up with unnecessary words. Brief is better when you are shooting a mail for ending the relationship.

Use the right language

Refrain from making any negative or hurting remarks in the email when using it as a means to convey your decision to part ways from your partner. Remember that mails can be forwarded and hence be very careful about the words you choose to inform about your decision to end the relationship. Decide on how personal you would like to get given that other people may have access to the mails of your recipient.

Be firm but not impolite

In case you feel that you are getting involved in an email debate with the other person, try and repeat your decision to call it quits in every subsequent mail. Avoid being rude and refrain from sending a stinker.
